About Dennis Elfert

Dennis Elfert graduated from Loyola Law School of New Orleans in 1991. After working as a law clerk for Terrebonne Parish District Judge John T. Pettigrew, Elfert practiced for several years in the insurance defense industry, handling claims on behalf of several major nationwide companies, including Allstate, State Farm, Progressive, Audubon, Farm Bureau, and Patterson Insurance companies.
Elfert turned his attention to helping the injured and disadvantaged when he joined the Law of Firm St. Martin, Lirette, Shea, and Watkins, which specialized in serious maritime personal injury. During that time, he assisted and led several claims which resulted in several $1,000,000+ verdicts and resolutions.
In 1999, Elfert was asked to join the 32nd Judicial District Attorney's office as a prosecuting litigation trial attorney. As a veteran Prosecutor, he has handled thousands of cases, championing the rights of victims against their wrongdoers. He is currently still an active Prosecutor within the Terrebonne Parish District Attorney’s Office and serves as Chief of Staff of the Houma-based office.
In 2013, Elfert was appointed lead Prosecutor in the prosecution of State of Louisiana vs. Ricky Dane Brown. Earlier that year, investigators with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested Brown as the perpetrator of a ‘cold case homicide’ of a young woman named Edith McElroy, who had been violently killed over 30 years prior.
As a result of a successful verdict of “Guilty of Second Degree Murder’, the case was made subject of a national television documentary which aired on the Discovery Channel as part of its Swamp Murders series.
